The quality I find most unattractive in a person is close-mindedness.  There is absolutely no shame in not being able to understand something, but there should be a deep shame in sealing off a world of possibility and change.

There are many shades of gray when it comes to being passionate about something and being ignorant about something. What’s the difference really? Well, the difference includes why you feel a certain way, how much you’ve learned about it, but most importantly, never closing your mind off to the other side. I would really advise against that. The second you refuse to listen to (and I mean really listen and digest) other people’s opinions, you lose a huge piece of information. You lose the opportunity to learn about why and how people are different, and why that’s actually a beautiful thing.

It’s easy to focus on the exact words someone is saying, which may blatantly differ from your personal opinion. Not many people can look past the words and into the motivations of people. People’s words provide our only hope to learning about them but words are imperfect and sometimes very deviant from what is trying to be said.

Even the most disturbing acts, wild statements, and immoral beliefs show that humans are 1. not programmed, 2. not copies of each other, and 3. passionate. Take a minute to listen to the other side. Take a few minutes, or many minutes. But really listen. I promise, you’ll be constantly and endlessly surprised by what you’ll learn. You’ll never know enough about anything. And it really is a shame if you forget that.
